First Grade
This year so far in math the first graders have been learning about numbers, comparing numbers, place value, time, and length.
We are now starting to learn about addition. We reviewed the basics of place value because that is an essential concept in math, especially addition and subtraction!! Here is a great website video about basic addition, and there are links on the page for practice as well: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/addition-subtraction/basic_addition/v/basic-additionPLEASE practice simple addition facts with your students!! The more repetition, the better. There are simple ways to make it fun- make up story problems, roll some dice and add the different amounts together, use dominoes, etc... Show them ways that you add in your life so they can see that it really is important!
Here are some other addition practice games:

It would be SUPER if the first graders are given opportunities to practice what they have been learning! (Especially telling time- that's something they can practice anyTIME!)
We are learned about patterns before the break. There are patterns everywhere, so help your child to notice and identify patterns around them! We learned about patterns with numbers as well as colors, shapes, and sizes.
We spent a couple weeks learning about 2 dimensional shapes (polygons) and 3 dimensional (solid) shapes. They made a 2D shape book, and we're learning about what quadrilaterals and parallelograms are. Those are hard words for first graders to say! They also built their own 3D shapes with a team without me telling them how to do it, and they impressed me with their analyzing and problem-solving! Their 8th grade buddies helped them to glue nets into 3D shapes as well.

11/6/12: We counted the ballots from the first grade vote this morning, and we showed the results different ways. They were excited to see who won, and it was a close race!
11/8/12: Today was our first day of having 8TH GRADE BUDDIES come for math! The 1st graders and the 8th graders were all really excited. We will be having the 8th grade buddies come for part of math class every Thursday to help practice and review on a more individual level.
