Second Grade
We are now starting to learn about addition. We reviewed the basics of place value because that is an essential concept in math, especially addition and subtraction!! Here is a great website video about basic addition, and there are links on the page for practice as well: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/addition-subtraction/basic_addition/v/basic-addition
PLEASE practice simple addition facts with your students!! The more repetition, the better. There are simple ways to make it fun- make up story problems, roll some dice and add the different amounts together, use dominoes, etc... Show them ways that you add in your life so they can see that it really is important!
-Here are some other addition practice games:

We learned about patterns before the winter break. There are patterns everywhere, so help your child to notice and identify patterns around them! We learned about patterns with numbers as well as colors, shapes, and sizes.
The second graders have learned about place value (up to the hundreds place), comparing numbers, telling time, and measuring length. They even learned some Latin words along the way! Ask them to tell you what they know!
We learned about measuring temperature in degrees Fahrenheit and Celsius, on digital and non-digital thermometers.
The last couple of weeks we learned about polygons and solid (3D) shapes. Practice identifying the shapes you see around you, and discuss the different angles as well! How can you combine shapes to make different shapes?
We spent a couple weeks learning about money. We reviewed the names of the coins and how much they are worth. We also learned different ways to combine coins to make certain amounts of money and the different ways to write amounts of money. Practicing this at home would help a lot!
**Something that I need to emphasize is that 10 cents is NOT written with a decimal in front of it when you use the cent symbol. (".10¢") That would mean one TENTH of one cent. 10 cents can be written 10¢ OR $0.10. Please be aware of that and tell your children that if they ask.
